Widespread floods, devastating famine, destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones and bizarre weather patterns – evidence of global warming, or something more sinister and perhaps even more apocalyptic? Alex Kronaut, a young, shy, yet intelligent teen, newly introduced to the harsh realities and brutalities of high school is about to find out.
In a moment of distress, Alex unexpectedly discovers that she has a previously hidden ability to slow the progress of time. Her newfound talent draws the attention of an ancient, mysterious and secretive community known as Pythagoreans - a group who claim to be humankind's watchful protectors and masters of the fabric of space-time. With the ability to teleport and distort time, their powers seem superhuman. The Pythagoreans offer to instruct Alex in how to control her talents and use them to benefit humankind.
However, they have another motive.
The Pythagoreans, and in particular, a specialist branch known as the Invigilators, whose role is to monitor and investigate unauthorized use of the space-time fabric, believe the increasing frequency and ferocity of natural disasters plaguing the Earth is due to the return from exile of an evil and possibly supernatural being.
For some unknown reason, this demonic creature shows a particular interest in Alex, seeking her out as she practices her talents, and leaving a path of death and destruction in his wake. This strange and unexplained link between Alex and the creature intrigues and concerns the Pythagoreans. Is Alex a secret accomplice of the madman, or is she the long awaited next step in the evolution of humankind and the world's only hope to defeat him?
The possibilities will send Alex on a journey of self-discovery, ending in a climactic battle where she must make a choice between good and evil, and where the lines between the two are strangely blurred.
